Moisture Control in your Home

We all know how wild the humidity swings are in Michigan...  Summers can feel like you are swimming through the air.  And winters, despite all of the snow, produce drier air.  Learning how humidity plays a role in the longevity of our homes can be of major benefit!

Why should I monitor the humidity in my home?

The air in Michigan is moody to say the least.  We can see effects of these humidity swings in our homes if not properly maintained.  Most building materials are susceptible to movement with changes in both moisture and temperature especially DRYWALL.

Common Signs

Telltale signs of moisture problems can be easy to spot in most cases.  Drywall "nail pops" occur when the drywall has been moving with temperature and or humidity swings.  This can also be a sign of improper installation techniques, including the lack of adhesives on the back of the wall board.

How do I control the humidity in my home?

1.

Keep your AC running in the summer months

2.

Keep your space ventilated. Especially in moisture prone areas, like Bathrooms, and Kitchens.

3.

Use a De-Humidifier

4.

Enjoy long lasting beauty of your home!

Once you have the moisture level under control, any damage can be repaired.  Depending on the severity of damage, fixing your walls can be quite easy.  In some cases, however more substantial work should be done in order to properly repair the wall and or ceiling.  If the original installation practices are in question, it may be best to remove drywall completely and re-install new in order to be sure that the problem will not re-surface in the future.
